You will be able to store your suitcases in the Cloakroom.

Once again, we are delighted that dental students from around the UK have volunteered to help us with the conference. Many of our original student reps from past years are now well on their way to becoming successful cosmetic dentists in their own right and are also playing an active role within the Academy.

On Thursday 06 November, all food and refreshments will be served in the Lowry Restaurant on the Ground Floor.

On Friday 07 and Saturday 08 November all food and refreshments will be served in The Quays Bar (exhibition hall), on the Ground Floor.

We are holding our President’s Trade Reception from 12.30 to 14.00 and from 17.00 to 17.30 on Friday 07 November in The Quays Bar. This will enable delegates and sponsors to network over a drink (or two).

Please take the opportunity to engage with our sponsors. We would not be able to hold this conference without their continuing support. They have been chosen for their relevance to you as BACD attendees and will be showcasing their latest products and services.

For those who would like to use a Prayer Room, please make your way to the Reflection Room. This is located via stairs or lift access, to the left of the Art Gallery main entrance. Please note this room is also accessible to the general public.

This event will qualify for 18 hours of CPD over all three days (6 hours per day attended). You will be able to complete your evaluation form and download your CPD via your account dashboard. Please allow up to 10 days after the end of the conference for this to be activated.

The annual conference will have elements of enhanced GDC learning outcomes A, B, C and D

A: Effective communication with patients, the dental team and others across dentistry, including when obtaining consent, dealing with complaints, and raising concerns when patients are at risk

B: Effective management of self and effective management of others or effective work with others in the dental team, in the interests of patients; providing constructive leadership where appropriate

C: Maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice

D: Maintenance of skills, behaviours and attitudes which maintain patient confidence in you and the dental profession and put patients’ interests first.

Attending BACD Meetings does not necessarily qualify you to integrate new techniques into your practice.

The BACD expects delegates to rely on their clinical expertise and judgement before deciding whether they have received adequate training to implement any new technique or procedure in their practices and to seek additional training if necessary.

Please note that this programme may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances.

Finally, we look forward to seeing you at our next conference, which is being held at the Royal College of Physicians London, on 13 & 14 November 2026.

President’s Message

Welcome to the BACD 21st Annual Conference

Fifteen years ago, I walked through the doors of the BACD as a young, curious new dentist after having attended a single regional lecture whilst in my final year — not yet knowing that this academy would shape not just my professional path, but my purpose.

This year, I have had the privilege — and responsibility — of leading the BACD as its President during one of the most pivotal times in its history. Dental education, professional community, and member value are all being redefined across our profession, and while we’ve faced challenges, I’m proud to say: we’ve emerged stronger.

We’ve made bold but necessary decisions to safeguard the future of the academy by reimagining the annual conference going forward, restructuring not only to preserve our future, but to elevate it. We’ve reimagined the way we bring value to our members. We’ve leaned into our strengths: our community, our passion, and our shared belief that excellence in cosmetic dentistry is about more than aesthetics — it’s about integrity, trust, and heart.

This year we have more members within the BACD accreditation program than ever before, and 2025 marks the release of the BACD Awards in an attempt to showcase the very best our membership has to offer this profession and their patients. There has been unprecedented interest in events such as The Young Dentist Day, under the leadership of our Young Membership Committee, which was my attempt many moons ago at creating a self sufficient, inspirational and safe space for new dentists and students and never would I have imagined its success today.

I’m incredibly proud of the advances the academy has made this year in terms of digital presence, and growth of our online community. Having spent most of my years on the board as Communications Chair I understand how dynamic and challenging this space can be, and we are excelling. The BACD website is new, improved and works like an app to allow members to simply access their account and perform admin tasks but also to book events in style, such as the new gala dinner seat booking system and the membership points tracker and QR code event registration. Investing in these tools, allows the academy to not only remain innovative but provide a frictionless of use for our members.

This year we have re structured our individual committees, into the BACD Task Force. A group of highly committed and exceptional individuals all working towards a common goal, united as one, without friction or competition. With a support network like this, I am looking forward to the successes that will come in future years.

Our members are the heart of this academy. Whether you’ve been with us from the beginning or you’re attending your first BACD conference — you matter. It’s because of you that this organisation is thriving. Your commitment fuels everything we do. Membership benefits within the dental and non dental space have been a priority. The annual BACD ski trip has become a tradition, along with the driving and golf day, and boutique luxury event invites for members to exclusive product sampling and tastings. All of which exist to strengthen what the BACD is known for, it’s community.

Education has always and will always be the top priority for this academy, and the 2026 calendar has been designed with considerable thought by our Education Committee, taking note of what members want. Hands on, lecture, webinar, learning, along with international and home grown speakers together bring a unique offering not only for necessary CPD but for inspiration and tips and tricks that aim to maintain BACD members as at the forefront of what they do.

I must thank our incredible board members. You give your time and your expertise selflessly. Your passion is not only inspiring; it’s contagious.

Of course, Suzy Rowlands our executive administrator — there aren’t enough words to describe your contribution. Your devotion to the academy is unmatched, and we are endlessly grateful for your dedication behind the scenes. Quite simply, we couldn’t do this without you.

What gives me the most pride as President is not just what we’ve achieved this year — it’s what I see ahead. The future of the BACD is bright, because it will be in the hands of exceptional individuals who care deeply and dream boldly.

As I reflect on my journey from student to President, I’m reminded that this academy is not defined by one person or one year — but by the collective spirit of those who care enough to contribute, connect, and create something extraordinary.

So here’s to community. Here’s to resilience. Here’s to the next chapter of the BACD — one we’ll write together.

In an age where social media continues to expand its influence, our responsibility to promote ethical, high-quality cosmetic dentistry has never been more critical. Every day, we encounter a variety of images and definitions of cosmetic dentistry online, some of which raise concerns. As an Academy, it is our mission to provide dentists with access to the most advanced and highest-quality education, empowering them to set the standard for exceptional, ethical cosmetic dentistry in their practices and communities.

While the educational programmes we offer are at the heart of our work, the real strength of the BACD lies in the community we’ve built. At a time when professional isolation and mental health challenges are prevalent, the BACD offers a space where like-minded professionals can connect, share knowledge, and inspire one another.

This sense of community is not only vital for our professional growth – by refining our skills, exposing us to cutting-edge techniques, and broadening our perspectives – but also for our mental well-being. The friendships, support, and shared vision we cultivate here have a profound effect on our resilience. Personally, these connections have played a key role in making my career in dentistry so rewarding.

I want to extend my deepest thanks to all of our board members for their tireless work in delivering the best for our members, with special gratitude to Suzy, who has supported me and every president who has come before, with near endless patience; and remains central to the continued success of our Academy.

As I pass the baton to my successor Sam, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to each and every member of the BACD. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning 20 years ago or have just started your journey, you are the foundation of this Academy. Looking ahead, let’s continue to foster a culture of learning, camaraderie, and community, ensuring that the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry remains a beacon of outstanding British dentistry.

Dr Sascha Hein

As both a colour scientist and a Master Dental Technician, I have seen firsthand the gap between measured tooth colour and its perceived appearance. While recent advancements in digital shade matching and intraoral scanning have rekindled interest in colour measurement, critical questions remain: How reliable are these technologies? Do they truly capture the complexities of light propagation in dental hard tissues and restorative materials?

This lecture will explore the science behind tooth colour appearance, focusing on the interaction between light and diffusely scattering media. We will critically assess the performance of modern shade-matching devices—including spectrophotometers, colorimeters, digital cameras, and intraoral scanners—and discuss how their results should be interpreted. Furthermore, with the ongoing debate between ceramics and composites, we will investigate whether their optical properties differ as much as commonly believed, or if these distinctions are more nuanced than marketing suggests.

Attendees will leave with a solid foundation in optical principles, allowing them to make informed decisions about material selection and colour measurement technologies. By bridging the gap between perception and measurement, we can ensure more predictable and aesthetically successful restorative outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

Understand the Science of Tooth Colour Appearance – Learn how light interacts with dental hard tissues and restorative materials, and why perception and measurement often diverge

Evaluate Modern Colour Measurement Technologies – Gain insight into the strengths and limitations of spectrophotometers, colorimeters, digital cameras, and intraoral scanners in shade selection

Apply optical principles to material selection – Differentiate between the optical properties of ceramics and composites, and make informed choices based on scientific principles rather than assumptions

The key to success when providing dental care is understanding the patient’s expectations and using that information to formulate a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan.

Interdisciplinary treatment gives the dental team the opportunity to change, shape or develop an individual’s appearance, character, or self-image, while providing dental care that is functional and enduring. One of the most important aspects of treatment planning is to diagnose functional problems and to design occlusal/functional changes for long term longevity of the restorations whether they are direct composite or indirect restorations. This presentation will focus on the utilization of indirect ceramic restorations.

Objectives:

Indirect ceramic restorative material options will be discussed highlighting their esthetic, strength and long-term outcomes

Participants will learn an outcome-based preparation design for indirect ceramic restorations based upon the tooth problems that are present, the esthetic concerns of the patient, and the functional issues that need to be addressed to achieve a long-term enduring outcome

From the Clinic to the Designers: Comprehensive Clinical Connection

Facial Analysis, Digitalisation, and Efficient Communication with the Planning Centre and the Laboratory

A complex oral rehabilitation, a full mouth rehabilitation, begins by determining the ideal position of the upper incisal edge. To achieve this, it is essential to analyze the patient’s face, since this analysis forms the foundation of our clinical decisions.

The main tools for this study are extraoral photographs, the video interview, and the STL file from the intraoral scanner. With these, we can digitize the patient and begin both a static and dynamic analysis of their facial expressions, lips, face, and teeth—at rest and in a smile. This analysis allows us to define the starting point for the treatment plan.

The quality and orientation of photographs and videos are crucial: proper symmetry, angulation, and calibration help prevent errors that may compromise the harmony of the final result. A poor- quality photograph can lead to inadequate planning.

Subsequently, it is necessary to calibrate the images and perform a basic static and dynamic facial analysis. This information is then shared with the dental laboratory or planning center, who must fully understand our criteria and aesthetic philosophy in order to align the teamwork.

In this context, the EGOP concept (Esthetically Generated, Occlusally Protected), developed by Grupo ABC in Argentina, plays a key role. This approach proposes beginning the treatment plan by establishing the ideal esthetic parameters and, from there, adjusting function and occlusion to protect and maintain the esthetic design over time.

Esthetics and function are inseparable: proper function ensures longevity, while anatomical harmony generates beauty.

Today, patients demand not only high-level esthetics but also efficient chewing function. Therefore, the true challenge of a comprehensive oral rehabilitation begins with accurate patient digitalization, precise facial analysis, effective communication with the dental laboratory, and, whenever possible, an intraoral trial with a motivational mock-up. This step allows us to validate the proposed design and engage the patient in the treatment plan.

To achieve this, we must master a simple yet rigorous photographic and video protocol that enables us to create a digital “avatar” of the patient. This facilitates interdisciplinary analysis, enhances communication with our patients, and supports the development of an integral treatment plan in which every specialty shares diagnostic responsibility and all disciplines work in synchrony.

In this FaceLink hands-on, using only our mobile phones, we will learn how to implement a basic photographic and video protocol that can be applied to daily clinical practice. Once this protocol is mastered, if you choose to upgrade to a mirrorless camera, the methodology will remain the same.

Can you relate to any of these situations?

Do you feel your clinical photos could have more impact and professional quality?
Would you like to record videos of your patients, but are unsure how to use them or how to do it properly?
Do you struggle to find a clear starting point for your smile design or full-mouth rehabilitation cases?
Do you feel insecure when approaching complex or highly demanding esthetic cases? Would you like to improve your facial analysis skills to make better clinical decisions?
Do you think your communication with the laboratory could be clearer, more precise, and more effective? Would you like your case outcomes to be more harmonious, personalized, and predictable?

If you answered “yes” to one or more of these questions… this workshop is for you

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

DIGITIZE
ANALYZE
COMMUNICATE

This Workshop aims to establish an efficient clinical-digital workflow between the patient, the clinic, and the laboratory or planning centre, built upon three essential pillars:

1. Digitize the patient in daily practice:
Incorporate practical and accessible tools for capturing photographic, video, and digital scanning records that accurately reflect the patient’s clinical and facial reality.

2. Analyze the information strategically and personally:
Apply a static and dynamic facial analysis approach that allows for smile designs adapted to each patient’s expression and morphology, integrating both esthetics and function.

3. Communicate clearly with the laboratory and planning centre:
Translate the clinical and facial diagnosis into a digital project that is understandable and reproducible, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and ensuring esthetic results that are consistent and predictable.
In addition, audiovisual communication with the patient helps them better understand the starting point and the treatment goals. Every full mouth rehabilitation must begin with the final design in mind.

Dr Sam Jethwa

BACD President-Elect

The BACD has been the biggest game changer for my career within dentistry over the past 11 years. I am fortunate to have made strong friendships, found invaluable mentorship, and learned a great deal about myself and where I feel I can add value to the profession. Working purely within cosmetic dentistry both clinically and in teaching roles, my clinical practice is limited to minimal preparation porcelain smile makeovers and treating patients with tooth wear. I believe that there has been an immense shift in the expectation levels our patients hold, and how safety in cosmetic dentistry is now paramount, which is where I see the BACD at the forefront. If you see me, come over to say hello, chat and find out what the BACD can do for you.

Dr Luke Hutchings

BACD President

It was a humbling experience to be elected to the board of the BACD many years ago, and this year, I am deeply honoured to have taken on the role of President. The BACD is an organisation I hold close to my heart, and as I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for the many personal and professional relationships that have been instrumental in shaping my career. The BACD has been a constant source of inspiration, fuelling my passion for dentistry, and for that, I owe a deep debt of gratitude to all my colleagues and fellow members.

I want to sincerely thank the entire BACD family – members, committee, and board – whose trust and unwavering support have been overwhelming throughout my tenure. A special thank you also goes to our sponsors, whose continued support has made it possible for us to deliver world-class education and inspiration.

Though my time as President is coming to a close, I will always remain dedicated to the academy and look forward to staying connected with our members, whether through service or at the bar! I am also excited for what lies ahead, as I know Sam, our incoming President, will lead the academy with passion, flair, and a unique vision, steering it toward even greater success. The future is most definitely bright!

Being involved with the BACD since its inception, I have seen the academy grow through the dedication and hard work of our many members to become the face of cosmetic dentistry within the UK.

A core pillar of the academy has always been accreditation, with the goal to inspire and motivate our members to become the best they can be.

My goal as accreditation chair, is to continue to support and encourage our membership to participate in the accreditation process, to the benefit of our patients, our self-development and to the BACD.

Every year I look forward to the conference – they have been more than just educational opportunities; they have been a source of inspiration, connection, and growth. The camaraderie, the shared passion for excellence, and the commitment to ethical cosmetic dentistry have made these events truly a highlight of the dental calendar.

The BACD’s dedication to promoting ethics and excellence in cosmetic dentistry is vital in today’s digital world. It has provided a platform for like-minded professionals to come together and elevate the quality of care we provide to our patients. As I step away from my role as a director of the academy, I remain as committed as ever to supporting the BACD, the current board and its mission. I encourage all current and future members to engage fully with the academy, join the committees, join the board and make a difference to the future of cosmetic dentistry in the UK!
