As my presidency draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on my journey with this esteemed Academy. It’s hard to believe that is has been over 12 years since I walked into my first BACD conference. Standing before you as President, my passion for upholding the BACD’s ideals and securing a bright future for our community has only grown stronger. It has been one of the greatest honours of my career to steer the ship this year, especially in such a meaningful year of celebration – 20 years of excellence, passion, and friendship.
In an age where social media continues to expand its influence, our responsibility to promote ethical, high-quality cosmetic dentistry has never been more critical. Every day, we encounter a variety of images and definitions of cosmetic dentistry online, some of which raise concerns. As an Academy, it is our mission to provide dentists with access to the most advanced and highest-quality education, empowering them to set the standard for exceptional, ethical cosmetic dentistry in their practices and communities.
While the educational programmes we offer are at the heart of our work, the real strength of the BACD lies in the community we’ve built. At a time when professional isolation and mental health challenges are prevalent, the BACD offers a space where like-minded professionals can connect, share knowledge, and inspire one another.
This sense of community is not only vital for our professional growth – by refining our skills, exposing us to cutting-edge techniques, and broadening our perspectives – but also for our mental well-being. The friendships, support, and shared vision we cultivate here have a profound effect on our resilience. Personally, these connections have played a key role in making my career in dentistry so rewarding.
I want to extend my deepest thanks to all of our board members for their tireless work in delivering the best for our members, with special gratitude to Suzy, who has supported me and every president who has come before, with near endless patience; and remains central to the continued success of our Academy.
As I pass the baton to my successor Sam, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to each and every member of the BACD. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning 20 years ago or have just started your journey, you are the foundation of this Academy. Looking ahead, let’s continue to foster a culture of learning, camaraderie, and community, ensuring that the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry remains a beacon of outstanding British dentistry.

The goal of complete mouth rehabilitation is the long-term restoration and/or enhancement of a functional and esthetic dentition. Along with the complexity of such treatment, the selection among a variety of available materials and techniques might make the procedure even more challenging. This is amplified when trying to restore patients with different facial types. Digital technology has been widely used to increase the predictability of implant planning and placement, however implementing a digital workflow exclusively in complex complete rehabilitation is still challenging and controversial.
This presentation will outline an individualized approach to prosthetically enhance or restore dento-facial harmony with fixed complete mouth rehabilitation. The most relevant criteria for treatment planning, VDO decision and treatment sequencing in full mouth reconstruction will be discussed along with setting functional and aesthetic guidelines. The selective integration of digital workflow, mainly with prosthetically driven virtual planning and guided implant surgery will be highlighted, thereby reducing treatment time and cost. To conclude, the final ceramic material decision will be analysed on the basis of functional and aesthetic rendition as well as expected strength performance according to the patient’s condition without disregarding the requirements of biocompatibility, aesthetics and improved long-term prognosis.

To be able to enhance aesthetics by lengthen teeth using composite resin, whilst minimising the risk of chipping through implementing occlusal principles.
Dentists will be able to:
1. Identify and distinguish between different causes of mechanical failure of composite edge bonding
2. Understand the potential causes and contributors to various wear patterns, and how to mitigate these factors to improve longevity
3. Formulate individualised preventative strategies for patients based on their occlusal risk assessment
Treating the worn dentition presents many challenges to the clinician, especially when the aetiology of the destruction was occlusal in nature. To restore aesthetics and function often requires lengthening teeth with composite resin or ceramic.
The focus of this workshop will be on aesthetic edge bonding principles, whilst at the same time reducing the risk of chipping through mitigating occlusal failure.
Delegates will be able to recognise wear patterns and lengthen teeth to enhance aesthetics, but plan this in a way to get the best longevity for our patients. Delegates will be able to practice this through a hands-on exercise of lengthening teeth with composite resin as well as checking and adjusting the occlusion to ensure BOTH beauty AND longevity, even in the most hostile of environments.
Occlusal strategies such as increasing the vertical dimension, adding canine risers and checking for functional interferences will be discussed and demonstrated to delegates.
