Be The Best That You Can Be

The Ladies Who Do Dentistry initiative was started by Jayne Sproson, Suzy Rowlands, Dr Carol Somerville Roberts, Dr Ewa Rozwadowska, Dr Clare Chavasse, when they met in a restaurant at a BACD conference and shared their particularly grueling professional experiences.  They decided on the spot to "get away from it all’"and started to meet annually for sharing knowledge, inspiration and friendship and yes, there were a few bubbles involved!

The idea for LWDD came from a wish to share this mutually supportive group further afield, and to encourage more female colleagues to participate in the benefits of the support enjoyed with BACD membership. With a little persuasion of the all-male BACD board, LWDD was born.

After our inaugural meeting we had some fantastic feedback with a demand for more meetings, keeping the format relaxed and limited in numbers to encourage a “chat show” style presentation with plenty of opportunity for audience participation.  This is what our delegates at the first meeting in 2018 had to say:

Fantastic to meet the future of dentistry

Women supporting women through sharing life experiences and mentorship

Uplifting, inspirational and comforting

It was a privilege to share the day with a group of enthusiastic and professional young women dentists and address some of the issues of being a woman in dentistry

Very inspiring and informative

This event will have elements of enhanced GDC learning outcomes  B, C and D

Effective management of self and effective management of others or effective work with others in the dental team, in the interests of patients; providing constructive leadership where appropriate

Maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice

Maintenance of skills, behaviours, and attitudes which maintain patient confidence in you and the dental profession and put patients’ interests first

Clare Chavasse - From Zero To Hero - Where There Is A Will There IS A Way!

What do you do if you qualify from Guys then go travelling around the world and come back with less than no money?

In this session you can find out how Clare succeeded as one of the minority i.e. a female practice owner.  Clare has earned her respect in both the professional community and in her home town through 27 years of commitment to her practice.  She has always had a preventative philosophy, running an OHE ‘booth’ parallel to hygienist care.

Clare left the NHS is 1997 when she found it impossible to do the beautiful dentistry she was learning about worldwide and keep the business viable.

Clare was one of the first practices to gain IIP and has picked up many an award along the way, including Most Improved Practice, Best Employer, Best Team (twice!) and her favourite, because it expounds everything Clare values – Best Patient Care.  Clare enjoys developing the digital and orthodontic restorative side of her practice and her new love is working voluntarily for Dentaid once a month, treating the homeless in Southampton.

Clare is a massive supporter of the BACD and LWDD.   She sees it a complete privilege to help and inspire other female colleagues in this welcoming forum.  All this around juggling family and her hobbies of singing in a rock choir, driving steam engines and sailing!

Listen to Clare’s Top Tips for finding your own success and leave knowing you too CAN do it!

Jayne Sproson - Aesthetic Business Models – Making the Most of Your Potential and the Market Potential

Business Development consultant and previous practice owner and director and responsible for operations for 3 aesthetic skin clinics, Jayne has 25+ years in dentistry and 14 years in aesthetics.  Jayne specialises in helping you plan your way through a busy market place to differentiate yourself from your competition.

This fun and fast-paced session is for anyone interested in aesthetic dentistry but does not know where to start, for those who have started but want to be more successful and for those who wish to take their aesthetic practice to another level. Jayne will facilitate the discussion on the many different models in the current market place and what the future will look like.

Qualifications and skills are not enough to earn money, create wealth and enjoy your profession.  You need to know how to apply them in the market place.  You also need to know how to communicate the value you bring to the patients - to differentiate yourself from the ‘it’s cheaper down the road’ arguments

Jayne will throw you some thought provoking questions and will ensure you go away with the answers that you can put into practice immediately.

Jayne has been with the BACD from its inception and encouraged all her clinicians to become full members.  Having served on the BACD Membership Committee as Vice Chair for many years, she now serves on the Communications Committee, where she knows she can add value, communication being key to all successful stories - including her own.

Jayne will also be interviewing Dr Bell and Dr Chavasse during the day – as previous delegates liked the informality of this format.
